Bishop Crowther's Episcopacy no doubt is the first indigenous See in Modern West Africa. However, the question of which diocese is the first in Nigeria has been a burning issue begging for historical clarification. The question among scholars: is the diocese of Niger Territories which is the See of Bishop Crowther, the same thing with the Diocese of Western Equatorial Africa under Bishop Hill and Tugwell? If it is the same thing, what happened when the Western Equatorial Africa Diocese was divided into two in 1919? Which one retains the See of Niger Territories? Is it the Diocese of Lagos or Western Equatorial Africa whose name was later change to Diocese on the Niger? More so, does the change of name of Western Equatorial Africa to Diocese on the Niger affect the year of her birth in 1864?
