What happened to the Church after the Gospel left Jerusalem?

The First 490 Years begins in AD 33 with the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ and the Gospel's movement into the Gentile world. Through seven seventy-year windows, it returns to the historical setting of the early Church.

As the apostles passed from the scene, Christians faced new questions: Who would carry the Gospel forward? Which writings possessed apostolic authority? Who would resolve disputes among churches? How did episcopal authority develop, and how did the Roman See gradually acquire wider influence?

Following Paul, Clement, Ignatius, Polycarp, Justin Martyr, Irenaeus, Cyprian, Eusebius, Constantine, Athanasius, Jerome, Ambrose, Augustine, Leo I, and others, the book traces the transmission of the Gospel, recognition of the New Testament canon, persecution and recovery, church structures, and relations between Church and empire.

Special attention is given to the developing authority of the bishop of Rome. Rather than projecting the mature papacy backward into the first century, the book follows identifiable historical steps from Clement, Victor, and Callistus through Siricius and Leo I.

Throughout the investigation, the book distinguishes what historical sources explicitly record, what conclusions multiple pieces of evidence can support, and what belongs to the author's own observation. Readers are invited to follow the evidence for themselves.

The seven seventy-year periods are seven windows into history. Emperors came and went. Empires rose and declined. People built, demolished, and built again. Yet the Gospel fire that began in Jerusalem did not go out.

The plan belongs to God. The choice belongs to man. So does the responsibility. From the first day to the last, there is only one true Captain: I AM.
