A New and Creative Effort

I appreciate Mr. Gollehon's fine book and hope he is inspired to write and publish more in the future. I am sorry to see that it is currently "out of stock". The story is an interesting combination of mystery, police action, spiritual quest, and antiquity search. It moves along at a fast pace with a few surprises. I appreciate the author's research into the antiquities trade around the world. I also like the many unusual characters. One could criticize the overuse of clichés and overly clever writing style when using the narrator's voice, but that is to be expected in a first novel and is part of its charm. As I read the book, I cringed at the disrespect Kyle Ellerby showed toward his longsuffering wife, and do not recommend him as a role model. I also get nervous whenever there are attempts to add to the Biblical Canon, even in light fiction. Making it look like it took Jesus a while to get his marketing model perfected also made me cringe. Nonetheless, I like to see small independent publishers and new authors succeed, and hope to see more books of this type.

Move Over DaVinci Code

I just finished this book because it was recommended to me by a friend. I was a little skepticle. However, the dust jacket doesn't do it justice! This book combines the adventure of a mystery with religious themes, while maintaining a sense of humor about it. The two main characters, a married couple, travel over North America trying to understand the husband's father. What they find are modern day miracles and an ancient scroll that is historically believed to exist: the "Q" scroll that was a source for the three synoptic gospels. My only major gripe was that Shannon did not really delve deeply enough into contents of the "Q" scroll, which I wanted to know more about. Unlike The DaVinci Code ( which I also liked), this book ends on a high note, without the ambiguity and religious confusion of Dan Brown's novel. Short and sweet: funny, inspirational quick read.
