ESSENTIAL READING FOR ALL DIRECTORS, PARTICULARLY NOVICE

If you've never directed a film before or need to brush up on your technique, The Film Director Prepares will provide you with the confidence that it can be done. Myrl A. Schreibman is a veteran in the field, and the experience he shares can be summed up as 'directing is an intuitive and creative process'. The only bizarre characteristic of this book is that Myrl A. Schreibman advises against relying heavily on storyboards when directing, and yet the book includes a storyboard software. In a nutshell, this is essential reading. As a new director who is in the process of directing my first feature film 'Six Lovers' - [...] - Myrl A. Schreibman's book is guiding me through the process. I also teach scriptwriting and script adaptation at university and now make reference to this book when advising my postgraduate students on the relationship between script writing, storyboards and directing.

The added CD from Frame Forge is outstanding and invaluable for storyboarding your project. Overall an excelent resource!

Practical and easy-to-grasp, this book breaks down directing to its most essential elements: the philosophy and the process. The book is a great starting guide for the newbie. Use it to learn just the fundamental principles of filmmaking, and then go out and discover your own principles.

OUTSTANDING BOOK THAT IS INTERACTIVE

This book is an entirely interactive book as it contains a CD-rom that has a 3d storyboarding software that makes it absolutely remarkable in being able to manipulate the images in the book to experiment with concepts and precepts that the author is knowingly speaking about. The Directors Guild of America calls this book the definitive book for directors and encourages not only those who are learning to direct but those who already direct to hacve this book in their library. It is told from a very easy and understandable perspective and full of practical stuff about telling stories, saving production time during production, working with talent, directing various forms of television and most of all what it means to do coverage to tell stories. This is one book that you must have!
