What do you get when you combine a hard-ass attorney for a wife (Julie), a philandering dentist for a husband (Ronan) and a feng shui junkie cum novice painter for a mistress (Nicole)? A love triangle gone to hell. Add an incorrigible character for a best friend and a scheming woman for a mother to the mix. What you have is one big emotional roller coaster ride of curses, laughs and tears. And no good chi was able to prevent that from happening. The book outlines the many challenges and vengeful plots that the Julie bared and executed against Ronan and Nicole. A Porsche was scratched. An aquarium was smashed. Some fishes were badly osterized. A laboratory and a painting were destroyed. A cat died of heatstroke. These were just some of the many vengeful acts Julie had to execute just to exact vengeance on the illicit couple while she pretended to be Nicole's savior and best friend. However, as her vindictive plans unfolded, Julie got to know Nicole better. Julie discovered that Nicole was entirely likeable -- sweet, thoughtful and warm-hearted. This made things worse for Julie as she eventually realized that Nicole wasn't really the enemy but her husband was. One meeting in a French diner ended the Ronan-Nicole affair after it was discovered that Nicole was pregnant, much to Ronan's dislike. He eventually split up with Nicole and tried to get back with Julie but to no avail. He ended up with at least 5,000 pounds worth of credit card debt, with no place to live in and with a pretty smashed Porsche. Julie and Nicole eventually put their past behind them as the former became smitten with the latter's baby. The writing was funny, creative and vindictive. It's scary to think what a woman would do just to get revenge. There some occasions wherein I thought, "Is that legal? You're an attorney, for goodness sake! Where's common decency here?" However, it made me re-think and tried to imagine myself in Julie's shoes. I guess I may have done something like what she did, but hers was way too extreme. It's a fun book to read and offers a different vantage point about the ol' love triangle plot that romance stories, drama or otherwise, normally depict.
