Book Overview

With echoes of The Road, New York Times bestselling author Anthony Ryan's The Feeding is a brilliant postapocalyptic novel that is perfect for fans of Justin Cronin, M. R. Carey, and Alexis Henderson.

Fifteen years ago the feeders rose from the shadows to transform the world into a graveyard. The few survivors exist in fortified settlements surrounded by the empty ruins of a destroyed civilization. For years the citizens of New City Redoubt have relied on an elite cadre of Crossers to navigate the feeder-infested wasteland between settlements in order to trade for vital supplies. But the Outside is becoming ever more dangerous, and the ranks of the Crossers grow thinner with every crossing.

Layla, only a child when the Feeding destroyed the old world, spends her days scavenging the ruins for valuable scrap and her nights helping her adoptive family eke a living from the Redoubt's only movie theater. Now, with her father slowly dying, Layla resolves to join the Crossers to retrieve the medicine that can save him. Smart, ruthless, and fast on her feet, Layla quickly gains the respect of her fellow Crossers. But, in a world lost to the deadliest predators, can even the most cunning prey survive?

Dark world

A very dark destroyed world due to Feeders (kind of a mix of vampire and zombie) and how the survivors are living. There are fortified cities/safe havens, meds are scarce and supplies are running out, leaving people desperate enough to be crossers (those trained to run and gather supplies and do trade with the other cities). Layla, who is a kind of hard character to like because she trusts no one, though she ends up being a crosser to get the meds to save her dad. I guess most of the characters have trust issues as they all have secrets, some big enough to kill and destroy the remaining safe havens from the feeders. So, yeah, a dark story where you should not get too attached to any of the characters, even the ones that show kindness and good hearts. Though it was interesting to see Layla's journey and the little bits of humanity that she lets show in the quiet times (which are few in this book) amid the fighting off feeders and other dangers. I would like to learn more about the creation of the feeders and the alphas (mentioned only a bit in the story) and how the world became what it was. Though I also would not mind seeing what Layla gets up to after the journey and things she learned getting the meds for her father. I enjoyed listening to this audiobook and story. The narrator, Devon Sorvari did a great job in bringing Layla and the other characters to life in this apocalyptic wasteland of monsters, survivors, and people fighting against the darkness.
