Shallis had a huge crush when she was younger on Jared. He was then her sister's boyfriend and he broke her heart horribly. A few years later, Jared crashed Linnie's wedding, demanding she marry him. His pompous selfish attitude did nothing to endear him to Shallis' family. Now Jared wants to make amends for all the mistakes and hurts from his youth. The attraction between Shallis and Jared is strong, and while they answer the mysteries of her grandmother's life, they also find friendship. But Shallis' grandmother isn't the only secret they unearth. Jared soon finds that his own life has been built on secrets. I loved Jared from the first chapter. Ms. Darcy immediately lets us know that though flawed Jared truly is trying to redeem his past deeds. Shallis has always had expectations heaved on her, and when she comes back to her hometown, she feels as if she's let the town down. In Jared, she finds she doesn't have to answer to her life's decisions. Their chemistry sizzles, but their friendship blossoms. A most excellent read! Skeletons in closets seem to be the underlying theme in this book. There are secrets that threaten all that has been held as truth. Jared and Shallis' romance amidst all the brewing scandal is realistically portrayed. These could be real people. Ms. Darcy gives Jared a conscience and makes him his harshest critic; and gives Shallis' a strong desire to please those she cares for while still holding hard to her ideals. Well done!

EXCELLENTLY WRITTEN - NEAT PLOT- A BIT OF A MYSTERY

Thoroughly enjoyable plot - great characters - family tension. Jared Starke was re-evaluating his life - big Corporate lawyer from Chicago. Shallis Duncan was home from SF and a busy, complicated life of a beauty queen - former Miss Tennessee. She and Jared has a brief, complicated past - could they be civil now? How about a brief torrid affair now? Also involved in the family mix-up is her older sister, Linnie and husband, Ryan - horse breeders. And momma is a hoot. And lawyer Grandpa Abe Starke knows more secrets of the people of Hyattville than Jared and Shallis imagined. Even Shallis's late grandmother had secrets not known to her family. I had to chuckle at the method explained on why Shallis got pregnant - yeah! Definitely recommended - M
