The Fate of Others

Since 1953, Yad Vashem, Israel's Holocaust Martyrs? and Heroes? Remembrance Authority, has recognized as ?Righteous Among the Nations? nearly 25,000 men and women who rescued Jews during the Shoah. By design, this honor has been bestowed only upon individuals who are not Jewish. Throughout Nazi Europe, Jews also risked their lives to save others. Yet, Jewish rescuers have gone largely unnoticed, their names unrecorded and their stories untold. The Fate of Others is the true story of a band of Jewish resisters living in France who, in 1943, were given the mission of smuggling Jewish children to Switzerland. From a base of operations in the French Alps, working beneath the noses of German officers, they received children sent from distant cities and towns. They organized the children into groups and accompanied them to the border. Helped by righteous Catholics and Protestants in the Haute-Savoie region, they dodged German patrols and got the children past barbed wire barriers erected to keep them out. The circumstances of the smuggling work required that the rescuers not disclose their real names or the name of the organization to which they belonged. Therefore, even today'almost seventy years after France's Liberation'few of the ?others? who made the dangerous crossing know the true identities of those who saved them from their Nazi-dictated fate.
