Jeff Rovin makes great reading.

It's a weird mix of material. It's not meant to be a comprehensive encyclopedia of myth, fantasy, folklore, comic books, and the like, but rather it provides interesting examples of each and is HIGHLY readable. I read and re-read this material, then years later each of my kids discovered it and found themselves drawn into it. Rovin really grabs you.
