The Family Nobody Would Have Chosen

By Lance Peppler

What kind of family would you choose for the Messiah?

If you were writing the story of a king, you would begin with heroes. Noble ancestors. Men and women whose lives inspired admiration.

Matthew does the opposite.

He opens the New Testament with a genealogy most readers skip - a family tree filled with liars, schemers, adulterers, foreigners, outcasts and kings who should have known better. Then, against every convention of the ancient world, he deliberately names five women whose stories respectable history would rather forget.

Why?

The Family Nobody Would Have Chosen takes readers on a journey through the extraordinary people hidden in Jesus' family line. With historical insight, biblical scholarship, gentle humour and engaging storytelling, each chapter uncovers the lives behind the names, revealing a God who works through flawed people, broken families and impossible circumstances.

Along the way you'll discover that Matthew's genealogy is far more than a list of ancestors. It is an invitation to see grace where others see failure, hope where history seems lost, and the quiet providence of God at work through generations of ordinary lives.

By the time you reach Bethlehem, you may never read the Christmas story - or your own family story - in quite the same way again.
