The rapid collapse of the Soviet Union produced many dramatic effects, some of them considered beneficial (the ending of the Cold War, disarmament, self-determination for Eastern Europe); others negative (ethnic conflict in the old Soviet Union and Yugoslavia, instability in general). This study investigates why great powers fall, analyzing not only the Soviet case, but also Britain, Austria-Hungary, Germany and the USA. Proceeding from this, the contributors examine the consequences of the fall of great powers for peace and stability in the world. The tension between stability and legitimacy, between a peaceful and a just democratic order, is particularly explored.
