After moving into a big old house named Devonshire Manor that was left to them by their eccentric Uncle George, Twelve year old Max and his family thought their troubles were over. Until one day, Max's baby brother was taken out of his pram in the back garden of their house and taken to the land of Fairies called Faeland by seemingly ordinary looking garden gnomes, but they were, in fact, far from innocent. They had kidnapped him by order of the Dark Queen to hold for ransom against the return of a jewel that was stolen from her royal crown. With the help of four Fairies that were living in a giant, old Oak tree in the back garden of Devonshire manor, Max travelled to Faeland. During the trek through dense forests, across stinky swamps and sometimes holding on for dear life on the back of birds, Max encountered beings he had only read about in story books. Some beings tried to help but it was up to him alone to persuade the Dark Queen to release his brother and let Max take him home again. He had no idea how he was going to rescue his brother or if he would even make it back from Faeland, but he had to do something. His baby brother, too young to know what was happening, would grow up in Faeland never knowing anything about his family in Max's real world if he couldn't get him back. Max couldn't just leave it and forget all about him, he had to get him back, no matter what the cost to himself.
