With backyard chicken keeping and urban farming at an all-time high, the proudest of purebred poultry take center stage once again in this fully revised and expanded edition of the classic The Fairest Fowl, now retitled The Magnificent Chicken. Updated in hardcover with even more chickens and an enlarged resource section, this celebration of the wonder, peculiarity, and magnificence of championship chickens showcases more than 40 astonishing breeds in glamorous photos--many brand new--and informative text, while an introduction by Ira Glass explores the finer points of poultry shows and chicken portraiture.
This book has amazing portraits of chickens with some imformation about each one. I wish the author had told us where each breed is from. Also is was not comprehensive of u s chicken breeds, but still an outstanding book.

I was absolutely charmed by this book. The text and beautiful color photos take you into the world of unusual chickens and the people who breed and show them. If you are fond of barnyard animals, you will love this book.
The most beautiful chicken book ever written

This is an amazing book. Anyone who has ever dealt with chickens would be amazed by these pictures. They are portraits (a portrait of a chicken? I would have thought it impossible)of the most amazingly beautiful birds. I just page through the book over and over again, transfixed by the beauty of these little farmyard creatures.
Feast your eyes

This book is simply beautiful. I had no idea these birds were anything more than something to deep fry. But this photographer has shown that there are many beautiful, exotic, and downright strange looking breeds of chicken out there. The pictures have such amazing detail that I see something new on each viewing and the birds really seem to be posing. The essay at the end was interesting too, made me feel like I was there while Ms. Staples shot the photos. Highly recommended.
Odd yet beautiful

I read a review of this book that said, "Put down the review and go buy this book." With a recommendation like that, I had to see what all the fuss was about: this book is great fun! The photographer has captured the chickens in a way that makes them much more interesting than I thought chickens could be, plus learning about the chicken shows was a stitch! I agree: buy this book! Boatloads of enjoyment for very little investment.
