Starts slow, gratuitous s-e-x, potty mouth, excessive smoking, skewed history.

Capt. Stefan Brandt (Jai Courtney), who does not have the best reputation as a soldier, gets a unique assignment to protect the deposed Kaiser Wilhelm II (Christopher Plummer) While performing his duty, he interfaces with a maid, Mieke de Jong (Lily James), with her help and others, Capt. Brandt learns more about himself and how he is the “Exception” to the SS attitude of the time. During Brandt's metamorphosis, we may learn a little about ourselves. Remember this is based on the historical novel "The Kaiser's Last Kiss" by Alan Judd; so, the story does not have to be and is not accurate history. In the process of making the movie, the screenplay by Simon Burke, a few characters were changed, such as Brandt was moved from the SS to the military so he could be more sympathetic to the Kiser’s view of the day, and look discussed at Heinrich Himmler’s (Eddie Marsan) ingenious solutions to correcting the population problem. The moviemakers just had to add some soft p-o-r-n to express feelings that may have taken longer if the maid had stayed clad. Also, of course, excessive smoking so that Capt. Brandt could smell gun oil on the cigarette pack. Then there is the excess of potty mouth, which saves from an expanded vocabulary. As the film wraps up, you get the real meaning of the title and begin to like the characters that survived.
