Honest and engaging journalism

Coming from a long line of Freemasons and as a professional editor and historian, I devour virtually every Masonic title I can get my hands on. It's refreshing to finally see a major publisher produce an introductory book on the subject that is extraordinarily well written and obviously objective. The previous reviewer's comments are both fascinating and somewhat surprising. The reviewer, Christopher Hodapp, just "happens" to be the author of a competing title, "Freemasons for Dummies." A high level Freemason himself, the reviewer is rather insistent that interested readers stick to books written only by Freemasons. Much of the current crop of Freemason literature is written by active Masons who are overtly protective of the fraternity and tend to gloss over the tougher issues in its history. The authors of "Everything Freemasons" do not make the same mistake. While Karg and Young cast Freemasonry in an accurate and positive light, they aren't afraid to discuss the controversies of Masonic history, and they do so with engaging style. The section on the "Lucifer" controversy is remarkable. Virtually every other publication that touches on this subject gets it wrong, rehashing inaccurate information as fact. The authors obviously performed serious research, and lay this discussion out more clearly and accurately than anything I've read. This element alone is more than worth the price of the book. The entire book shows the same dedication to research, accuracy, and authenticity. For a subject that has been an important part of my life, I don't want to be coddled with the slanted fluff of too many current publications. "Everything Freemasons" offers highly accessible and entertaining reading along with solid, unbiased professional journalism.
