Instant New York Times bestseller - USA Today bestseller - National Indie bestseller October 2025 LibraryReads Hall of Fame Pick - November 2025 Indie Next Pick From Alix E. Harrow, the New York Times bestselling author of Starling House, comes a moving and genre-defying quest about the lady-knight whose legend built a nation, and the cowardly historian sent back through time to make sure she plays her part-even if it breaks his heart. Sir Una Everlasting was Dominion's greatest hero: the orphaned girl who became a knight, who died for queen and country. Her legend lives on in songs and stories, in children's books and recruiting posters--but her life as it truly happened has been forgotten. Centuries later, Owen Mallory--failed soldier, struggling scholar--falls in love with the tale of Una Everlasting. Her story takes him to war, to the archives--and then into the past itself. Una and Owen are tangled together in time, bound to retell the same story over and over again, no matter what it costs. But that story always ends the same way. If they want to rewrite Una's legend--if they want to tell a different story--they'll have to rewrite history itself. "Alix E. Harrow is an exceptional, undeniable talent." --Olivie Blake, New York Times bestselling author of The Atlas Six "An utter masterpiece... I loved every single page." --Rachel Gillig, New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of One Dark Window
A love eternal, doomed to die again and again yet meet again under the yew tree. Sigh.....This was an absolutely wonderful time travel love story the should be shared far and wide and not for someone else's gain (not like that completely selfish and horrible Vivian!)
It is true that the past is rewritten by the victors, and in this tale, the victors have the ability to go back in time and twist the actual truth to better rule Dominion. And the tale focused on is the one of Una Everlasting, orphan found by a princess (after the orphan slaughters the princess's captors), helps found the kingdom of Dominion through conquest of the neighboring people, goes on a quest for a grail to save the queen and then slain and buried and turned into a figurehead to the might of Dominion for hundreds of years. Add in the twisty bits of time travel of a bespectacled scholar who studies tales of Una and finds himself meeting said hero again and again, writing about her and falling in love and tries to save her plus a villain who makes it happen over and over again and it is so wonderfully and heartbreaking! I found it increasingly hard to put it down as I kept rooting for Owen and Una to be able to find a way to break the cycle of love and death and get a very well deserved happy ending (ending being the key word because it is awful to repeat and remember!)
There are splendid duels and dragons and I am in awe of Una's fighting prowess but also sadness, sacrifice, some awful deaths and I felt all the heaviness of Una and Owen as well as the joy when they find each other again. I must say I loved how their last words before death were all about waiting for you under the yew tree, always. It is beautiful. This is a masterfully woven tale that I will be thinking about for a long time and will read again once I have gotten my emotions under control.
