The Evergreen Club does not have a mission statement, a board of directors, or a brochure. It is simply a room.
It contains a pineapple that presides over the central table and refuses to explain itself. It contains an egg timer that measures no known interval. It contains an eccentric ensemble: a man who guards a bag of Sonic nugget ice with paramilitary devotion, a woman who labels everything that holds still, a thousand-piece puzzle that will likely outlast Western civilization, two dogs named Steinbeck and Hemingway, an orange cat named Byron who claims every surface, and a raven named Poe who has been watching everything for years.
The members are adequate. The room is adequate. And adequate is enough.
But when the Department of Community Enrichment and Senior Engagement arrives with grants, surveys, and a brochure that uses the word "vibrant," the Club must decide how to defend its silence.
The Evergreen Club is a deadpan literary comedy about social absurdity, the quiet rebellion of continuing, and why "adequate" might be the highest praise life has left to offer.
