The history of Nagarjuna Hill dates back to the 3rd century BCE, the reign of the Satavahanadynasty. Nagarjuna Hill gained significant prominence under the Ikshvaku dynasty's rule in the 3rd and 4th centuries CE. Ikshvaku's support led to the construction of numerous stupas, viharas (monasteries), and chaityas (prayer halls) here. Acharya Nagarjuna, one of the most influential figures in Mahayana Buddhism, played a crucial role in the development. Two archaeologists started their search for the hidden ancient artefacts and treasures buried in the Nagarjuna Sagar area and the Reservoir. Unknown to them was a man who was more resourceful than they were. He had been working in that zone for a long time and was enjoying the fruits of his efforts. He walked to the strong room where he stored his treasure collections. There were many small figurines; terracotta shapes, vessels, jars and broken pots. Still, he has not disposed of the Goddess Kali bust. He stood there looking at it for some time feeling proud of himself and then closed his strong room.
