I read The Eternal Care Plan on a plane miles above the Pacific ocean one spring, and one word kept coming to mind over and over again: raw. This is a great debut piece for Martinelli; the characters are painted so vividly you feel you could call them in their dorm rooms and try to tell them everything is going to be alright (even if it's not). What it lacks in experience it makes up for in untainted emotion and passion, and you can feel that in every frustration-laden page. For anyone who grew up during the age of disillusionment (we <3 the 90s), The Eternal Care Plan recalls those bittersweet, halcyon days of our now-dead radio idols screaming and banging their heads against the walls of conformity that would eventually crush them out of existence. Read and remember, and perhaps wonder what happened.
