Jody and Patrick Dean live in Sydney, Australia. One night they learn from the news that their neighbour the 70 year old Esther Reid is arrested in Iran. She is accused of espionage. The Deans receive a visit from the Australian authorities. The officials want to know, what is the connection between Jody and Mrs Reid, since Jody's name has come up a few times during the conversation between Esther and the Australian Ambassador, who visited her whilst in custody? Then, the Israeli government gets involved with an extraordinary exchange offer, which makes Esther's situation worse. Jody believes in Esther's innocence and after long discussions, Jody and Patrick decide to make the trip to Iran. Jody wants to know, what is behind Esther's sudden interest in her. What did Esther do? What is the connection between Esther and the Israelis? In Tehran, Jody finds out, that Esther is very ill. While Esther tries to explain her mysterious behaviour, Jody understands, that she is not only telling her the story of her life, but opening up with her most secret feelings and thoughts, that she had never told to anyone, before. Esther dies before she could tell to Jody everything she wants to know. The Deans decide to go to Israel, to get answer to the question. Was Esther Reid a spy?
