Ilan Stavans came to Dallas to give a lecture on Spanglish. His ideas were quite original. I speak Spanglish all the time but feel guilty about it. After his lecture, I not only felt thankful but creative. So I brought two books by Stavans, the one on Spanglish and this one. I think he's a visionary thinker. Every Hispanic person should read him. He offers new ways to understand the community. There are essays in this collection on Sandra Cisneros, Cantinflas, Subcomandante Marcos and Mario Vargas Llosa that are very intelligently argued.
Excellent book!

I've enjoyed every essay and story in this book. Mr. Stavans is a Mexican Jew. He was at the Miami Book Fair in November 2000, presenting work he's written in Spanish and English. He is completely fluent in both languages. This volume is a sampler of his work and it's worth every cent of it. Mr. Stavans is a persuasive thinker and an excellent fiction writer. What I like the most about this book is that the material is clear and displays conviction and integrity. I highly recommend it!
