Balanced, integrated view of strategy, and highly readable

I bought this book to complement my MBA study and was very surprised at how readable it was. For a book that presents itself as a book on corporate strategy, I must say that the two Australian business professors have done a very good job of integrating the strategic concepts from different 'generations' of strategic thinkers.The authors view strategy from a standpoint of possessing the right frameworks and tools to make smart and timely business decisions - from strategic planning, belief systems/culture, competence, innovation, to the more strategic aspects of market segmentation, and an asset/economic/finance view and integration of a firm. The book balances and integrates these concepts but it does so with abundant applications and illustrations, through real-life case studies of well-known international corporations.What I particularly like about the book is how the authors provides a broad overview of these concepts in the introductory chapters, then expands the level of detail and finally ties up the whole area of strategy in a holistic way in the conclusive chapters. This is obvious but often not done in right in many business texts.However, what is probably lacking is the incorporation of learning from firms playing in the so-called digital economy, and how the dynamics of strategy changes in this information age. This I hope will be included in Release 2.0.All said, a solid book which one can take as a premier into the world of strategy - well written and highly readble.
