What would the world look like in the grips of a highly contagious virus causing mental illness? What if that virus, created as a weapon by our own government, leaked before completion of a crucial antidote? When faced with that very situation in The Enemy Within, the US military activates a brutal containment strategy-a grisly soldier named Fox. As Fox hunts contacts of the virus, he also becomes infected. His only hope for a cure is to protect the two people he was sent to kill, Jack and Claire. The trio hide away to buy time for Jack, an imminent virologist, to develop an antidote. As a trained psychotherapist, Claire attempts to keep the group grounded while the virus leads them all further from reality. Time runs thin and paranoia mounts as the group faces multiple threats. But which threat will prove to be fatal? The military tasked with hunting them down or what lurks within causing an inevitable psychosis?
A taut engaging medical mystery and thriller combined
Published by Geoffrey Hoare , 4 months ago
Greg Player has crafted a taut medical thriller with a gripping and chilling mystery that takes a while to unfold. This appears to be entirely intentional as it mirrors the progression of the disease that is at the center of the plot. I was particularly engaged by the sophisticated psychological insights in the story as voiced by some of the characters and as described by the author. The main three or four characters are well developed to the point where the death of one of them comes as a shocking loss. The bad guys, by contrast, are a bit one-dimensional but we surely know that they are bad! The settings center around Atlanta and North Georgia and will be easily recognizable to anyone familiar with the area. If you like mysteries in general and medical mysteries in particular, this is a book that you could enjoy in a single sitting. It is that good and I look forward to future offerings from this first time author.
