This is an innovative novel that covers a time in China's history that is not widely known by the average westerner - the turbulent time leading up to the foundation of the Communist Party and the People's Repulbic of China as it is today. The story is told by two women, one a feisty red head woman born in Mongolia to an adventurous mother of English stock; the other a Chinese from an aristocratic family who pays dearly for her political ideals and revolutionary fervour. The characters are richly drawn and believable; the history true to the facts - it was a messy time between the World Wars and many people died. The obligatory romance palls a little from time to time, but this is a small criticism of a fine and well researched novel. If you can find a copy I recommend it highly
