Book Overview

This, the original little book, has been incredibly popular since it was first written back in 1918. William Strunk, Jr., a professor at Cornell, released it in a privately printed edition in 1919 "to lighten the task of instructor and student by concentrating attention...on a few essentials, the rules of usage and principles of composition most commonly violated." A year later, it saw its first major publication. This short guide to writing is as useful today as it was when it was first released. Everyone should own a copy.

This Large Print Edition is presented in easy-to-read 16 point type.

Condensed Elements of Style

The Elements of Style Fourth addition seems smaller than the other edition. But I use it at my job and get things done correctly. I will probably buy the next edition when it comes out.

A Wonderful Resource for Everyone.

Whether you want to write a book or just improve your everyday writing (Email, Text, or the occasional Letter/Card), The Elements of Style is a great resources. Simple and to the point, Strunk doesn’t waste your time. A few things might seem a little outdated (depending on what edition you buy), but most of the lessons in this little book are timeless.

The pleasure of this edition is in the design

For the reviewer who pines for life as it was 50 years ago, actually in 1959, William Strunk Jr.'s Elements of Style, which had gone out of print at that point, was revised by a former student of Strunk's, E.B. White. This 2005 revision takes nothing away from the book, but reconsiders the original from a design perspective. As far as I'm concerned, the cloth cover, the 57 color illustrations, the high-quality printing, only add to the pure pleasure of reading or re-reading this book.

3 Books Every College Student Should Read

When today's college students are reading, their literary canon is centered on textbooks, course related articles, and manuscripts. Only a few students create the opportunity to read beyond the confines of their coursework and for many this is a missed opportunity. What about the books that will help you make the most of these precious years, not just the years that come after?
