The Elements Of Non Euclidean Geometry (1909)

By Julian Lowell Coolidge

Book Overview

The Elements of Non-Euclidean Geometry is a mathematical book written by Julian Lowell Coolidge in 1909. The book is a comprehensive introduction to the principles of non-Euclidean geometry, which is a type of geometry that differs from Euclidean geometry in that it does not assume the validity of Euclid's fifth postulate, also known as the parallel postulate. The book begins with an overview of Euclidean geometry and its limitations, before delving into the various types of non-Euclidean geometries, including hyperbolic and elliptic geometries. Coolidge explains the fundamental concepts of non-Euclidean geometry, such as curvature, geodesics, and parallelism, and provides numerous examples and exercises to help readers understand the material. Throughout the book, Coolidge emphasizes the importance of non-Euclidean geometry in modern mathematics and physics, particularly in the study of relativity and cosmology. He also discusses the historical development of non-Euclidean geometry, including the work of mathematicians such as Lobachevsky, Bolyai, and Riemann. Overall, The Elements of Non-Euclidean Geometry is a classic text in the field of mathematics, providing a clear and accessible introduction to the principles of non-Euclidean geometry and their applications. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
