Lieutenant Colonel James Comstock has the duty of testing a promising robotic infantry prototype against well-trained professional soldiers. Another officer is given the same task with a different prototype. Both machines have limitations as well as unique capabilities. The other prototype competes with his for acceptance by the US Army. Comstock faces numerous challenges, including the attitudes of some of his superiors. If he succeeds in creating a credible robotic infantry force, it will be tested in actual combat. If he fails, he will have no choice but to resign.
