The Educated Stupid: Why Intelligence, Education, and Success Do Not Protect Us from Stupidity?
What if intelligence doesn't protect you from stupidity-but sometimes gives you better tools to defend it?
We assume educated people should know better. We trust degrees, expertise, professional success, and intelligence as safeguards against terrible judgment.
History tells a different story.
Brilliant scientists have defended extraordinary mistakes. Financial geniuses have destroyed fortunes. Highly educated governments have walked knowingly into disasters. Experts can become prisoners of their expertise. And intelligent people can become remarkably skilled at finding evidence for exactly what they already wanted to believe.
The Educated Stupid investigates this uncomfortable contradiction.
Drawing on psychology, philosophy, history, behavioral science, and major real-world case studies, Prince Gharios El Chemor examines the crucial differences between intelligence, knowledge, rationality, and wisdom-capacities we routinely confuse but which are far from identical.
At the center of the book are two concepts:
Crypto-Stupidity - a serious and avoidable failure of judgment hidden beneath genuine intelligence, education, competence, or success.
The Crypto-Fool - the intelligent person who does not begin by asking What is true? but instead begins with what they want to believe and recruits intelligence, research, and rhetoric to defend it. The Educated Stupid - HRH Princ...
Through cases ranging from Challenger and Long-Term Capital Management to science, politics, business, crowds, and everyday life, the book examines how capable minds become trapped by confirmation bias, identity, ego, expertise, group pressure, certainty, and motivated reasoning.
But this is not a book about laughing at stupid people.
Eventually, the mirror turns toward us.
Because the most important question is not "How could they be so stupid?"
It is:
"Under what conditions do I stop thinking?"
Provocative, accessible, and practical, The Educated Stupid is an investigation into one of the most consequential weaknesses of the human mind-and a guide to recognizing it before our intelligence becomes an accomplice to our mistakes.
