Samantha Rose Johnson is a tough, cynical, but law-school educated, licensed private detective working in Elgin, Illinois. The witness agrees to provide a statement, but refuses to come back from Tennessee. Sam must travel to Tennessee to obtain his statement, and perhaps get an idea of what her criminal defense attorney Bruce Halverson has been hinting about with problems in the drug court.
