Our planet is part of a system of worlds comprising the Sun's family that was formed 4.6 billion years ago. Over that span of time, all plant and animal life has evolved, and in most cases gone extinct again; continents have divided, joined and moved; and ice ages have come and gone. While humans have in habited the Earth for a tiny fraction of the planet's history, in the last 150 years or so, our newcomer species has done a great deal to alter the planet, for better and for worse.
