Reeling from the break-up of her relationship and wanting to flee London, Dr Tess O'Brien heads for her father's homeland Scotland where she has secured an exciting new role working within Glasgow University's archaeological department. The department is headed by Dr David Mclean, like Tess a fellow Osteoarchaeologists/Forensic Anthropologist. Together they will investigate murders and war crimes all over the world. Tess suffers from trauma due to her kidnap as a young teenager living on the outskirts of Leeds. She has regular flashbacks and meltdowns. During her first murder investigation she meets head of the detectives Patrick; they do not get on at first, him seemingly misogynistic the environment being very male dominated. Soon Tess realises Patrick has a lot more too him and they form a relationship. Tess gets drawn into a game of cat and mouse by the elusive murderer, shockingly realising there are similar elements to her own kidnap, but surely, they can't be as her kidnapper was killed. At the centre of all of this are the ritualistic burials, like ancient burials that Tess has excavated, the killer obviously knows his or her archaeology. Patrick's feisty daughter Gina goes missing as does a female police colleague of Patricks, but who has taken them both?
