The Van Bemmel family left war torn Nederland to start a new life in the United States. Blending their Dutch culture into their new life created conflicts and required constant adjustments. The children learned to live in both cultures, one at school and with their new American friends and the other at home to maintain peace in the family. One son was drafted into the army, he did his tour of duty in Germany, the country that persecuted them in World War II. Another son joined the Marines and went to Vietnam. The mother struggled with loneliness and returned to Holland, but eventually rejoined her family. In all the struggles of adapting the family remained steadfast and never compromised their ideals. Each found their peace in making choices to be American.
