Early work of a phenomenal SF Author

I will start this review with the disclaimer that I love everything that K. W. Jeter has written. If you haven't read his work, beyond his well known but most formulaic books with the Blade Runner series or his Star War entries, you should search on his name and read some. While not his best work if you enjoy observing an author grow and evolve you'll like this book. This book, written at least 35 years ago and published in the pulp sf format, presages many of the ideas that became SF genres a decade latter. Jeter's ideas like P.K. Dick's were ahead of their time and inspired a generation of writers. He wrote cyberpunk, and steampunk before either of these formula's hit mainstream. Jeter is best as a character driven author, exploring the inner landscapes of persons drawn along through mysterious plots and devices. Usually set in dystopian post-apocalyptic worlds, he disdains introductory chapters that explain the world of each book. Requiring an active reader, willing to guess at the parameters of bookspace, his books are often like your first experience of a search and solve computer game. You will often find yourself thinking, "What's going on here?" and looking back a few pages for, "Did I miss something?" If you like being challenged while reading Jeter's for you. This book anticipates virtual reality and shared constructive fantasy that will become a part of the SF lexicon a decade later. Read this for its well told story or if you care about the roots of ideas. Finally; not a review of this book but a recommendation of another book (Dr. Adder) written by this author at about the same time, but not published for a decade by a too-timid and conservative SF publication community during the 70's that couldn't abide fresh ideas. This is a hard to find book, but it is well worth the effort.
