The future doesn't belong to anyone - don't let it in the door. She and Gavin were bathed in starlight and wonder as they watched a slowly descending shower of magic and impossible beauty. The stars landed on Allison's eyelashes, her hands, her hair, or simply disappeared. "How did you - how on earth did you do that?" She was examining her hands, pulling her pocket inside out, amazed and awestruck at what she'd just experienced. "I'll never tell," he grinned. "That's the simplest answer. I thought you might enjoy it." "Enjoy it? Gavin, I'm speechless. I've never seen, and I never will see anything like that again. You are..." in a rush of emotion she wrapped her arms around him and rested her head on his shoulder. "You are beyond..." He was holding her. She could feel his breath against her neck, the small of her back leaning into his arm. When he turned to look into her eyes, she couldn't avert his gaze. She touched his lips, traced the arc of his mouth, trembled at the thought of kissing him. He whispered her name as he bent and grazed his lips over her collarbone. She threw her head back and felt him draw her even closer. His fingers ran through her hair, his body taut against hers. There was nothing in the world but them, only them, their passion, their desire. His eyes were heavy lidded, his breath thick and sweet. She moaned, letting the fire he had lit in her, consume her. And then he kissed her. Allison closed her eyes. This was the end of everything, the beginning of everything. Deep and seemingly everlasting, they held each other, searching each other's eyes. She murmured, 'Gavin' and the kiss became hungrier, the passion like flashes of light. Allison felt dizzy, felt that if she let him go, she would break into hundreds of stars. "No more," she whispered, "no more." She pushed him away. He took her at her word. "All right. Yes, all right." And slowly he released her from his embrace. Allison took a step backward, slightly off balance. "Gavin," she looked at him as if she was seeing him for the first time. The air between them was crisp and new. "I.." "You don't need to say anything." Gavin took a step towards her, but she moved back farther into the room. "I do," she explained. "I really do." She was trying to get hold of herself. "Gavin, this can never happen again. Ever. I can never see you again." The reality of what she'd done was beginning to sink in. "I love Jed, I have loved Jed for years." His answer was simply, "You're right." He didn't try to stop her as she headed for the door. "It was wrong, and, and it wasn't fair," Allison said quietly but with a hint of anger in her voice. How am I supposed to resist all this?" Her glance encompassed the whole room. "Your wealth, your influence, your...who you are. The person you are." Her voice was cracking, her anger melting away. Gavin made no attempt to defend himself or to stop her from leaving. "What am I saying? What am I saying? This isn't your fault Gavin, it's mine." Allison was on the verge of tears, but she held them in check. Her lips were quivering. "It's Jed I love. It's Jed I have to love." She pressed her hand against the wall to keep herself from collapsing. Allison made no move to leave. Her breath was coming in short gasps. "I don't know what to believe, " she said quietly. Standing there, looking at Gavin, remembering his kiss, remembering the way he held her in his arms. Her mind could not take in everything that was happening. She headed toward the door, her heart breaking. She wanted him to stop her, but she knew he wouldn't; not Gavin Sanders. One more time, just one more time, she needed to speak his name. "Gavin," it was so soft, that she wasn't sure if he'd heard her. She turned and ran out of the room. The Dream Room.
