The Dragon's Tear and Other Tales i s an anthology of short stories and novellas that take place in and around the Kingdom of An Siobhraich Fonn, more commonly known in the Trade Tongue as the Magic Land. The final offering is not a tale, per se, but a Treatise on the Realm, past, present and future, by the noted Mage, Scholar, Artist, Sculptor, and Bon Vivante, Atavar the Wizard. (tm) He explains that, nearly sixteen centuries ago, magical workers of every race and stripe put aside their differences and gathered to magically separate the One World into two distinct, geographically identical domains; the Magical World and the Mundane World. This is known as the Sundering. Fewer than five percent of the One World's population emigrated to the Magical World at the time. They and breeding populations of all species translocated over through hundreds of portals, on land, in the sky and under lakes, seas and oceans. Most of these closed within a few years. A few portals between the worlds still remain, though almost all are dormant. Many individuals and some large groups have come through one of these, either intentionally or by mischance. Occasionally temporary portals are formed when electrical storms occur at sea on both worlds. Mundane World ships caught in these can be translocated to the Magical World. These are most common in the areas we know as the Devils Triangle and the Devil's Sea. Virtually all the inherent magical energy of the One World is now concentrated in the Magical World. There, Magic is still a real force and Dragons still soar the skies. There, hundreds of realms thrive in relative peace and prosperity. The Magic Land, whose borders encompass the coastal analogs of Southwestern British Columbia, Western Washington, Western Oregon and California as far south as the LA Basin, is just one of many. The Realm is a hodgepodge of semi-independent Principalities, Duchies, City- States and Freeholds. All recognise the sovereignty of the High King. Originally settled by Celts some nine centuries ago, more recent emigres include Scandinavian Dwarves, Medieval Teutons and a Feudal Japanese enclave. Many of the principal characters herein appear in the companion novel, The Magic Land.
