The Documentary History Of The Campaign Upon The Niagara Frontier In The Year 1812

By Ernest Alexander Cruikshank

Book Overview

On the bluffs and river crossings of the Niagara Frontier in 1812, empire clashed with republic at point-blank range. Here, the war speaks itself. In this landmark work of documentary military history, E. Cruikshank assembles original dispatches, field reports, orders, and eyewitness accounts from both British and American sides of the Niagara frontier campaign, creating an unvarnished primary source collection that follows the conflict week by week. From the vulnerable posts of the Upper Canada Niagara frontier to the contested Great Lakes shorelines, the volume reveals how strategy, confusion, courage, and miscalculation shaped key War of 1812 battles and the everyday realities of early 19th century Canada. Long recognised as a cornerstone of Canadian military history and Great Lakes military history, Cruikshank's painstaking compilation remains an authoritative war of 1812 reference for historians and researchers, yet it also rewards the curious general reader with its vivid mosaic of voices from the front line of British American warfare. Ideal for serious study, teaching, or personal exploration, it stands as a classic academic study edition and a touchstone for anyone interested in how nations are tested on a narrow river border. Out of print for decades and now republished by Alpha Editions. Restored for today's and future generations. More than a reprint - a collector's item and a cultural treasure.
