A Historical Western Romance that will make you fall in love.

Rebeccah Randolph had no desire to travel from England to uncivilized Santa Fe just to respect and honor her mother's dying wish. Even pleading with her Grandmother telling her that she is engaged could not sway the plans laid out for her. Rebeccah wanted to remain in England and marry Edward, the man she thought she truly loved. She had no choice but to go to Santa Fe for a year to teach Mexican children English, as well as spend some time with the father that abandoned her, her sister and mother many years ago. Colonel Sayer MacKlaren was the best known Indian fighter around, so when the good Doctor Randolph requested that he be the one to escort his daughters home safely, he couldn't refuse. Especially since rumors of the eldest daughter, Lydia's beauty swarmed about all of Santa Fe. When he arrived, he saw for himself; Lydia was quite pleasing to look at but she was nothing like her younger sister Rebeccah. Rebeccah stole his heart with her feisty temper and amazing beauty. Spending every weekend together, Sayer taught Rebeccah how to ride a horse, fish and shoot a gun. As time passed the two began having feelings for one another; although each kept the words unspoken because Rebeccah was still engaged to another man. Rebeccah's fiance was nothing compared to her Colonel, she knew she must make a decision. Leave Santa Fe when the year is up and return to her betrothed, or find a way to stay with the Indian fighter and surrender her heart. Just when Rebeccah is about to mail the letter to Edward containing the engagement ring and an explanation, her Grandmother shows up to return the two girls back to England. Sayer is still out looking for clues that the attackers may have left when they left him for dead. Can he return home in time to stop the love of his life from leaving on the train from Santa Fe? The Doctor's Daughter is an amazing Historical Western Romance full of adventure and vigor. Love awaits where you least expect it, but once it's found there is no turning back. Beautifully detailed characters, and exciting and dangerous events will keep you turning the pages. The book easily make me loose all track of time, from the beginning I was enthralled. I knew this would be a book I would fall in love with, and I could not wait to read what would happen next. Ms. MacQuigg is an author that we will be hearing a lot about in the future. She is a master storyteller and I can assure you that her Historicals are not to be missed. The Doctor's Daughter is a book all Romance lovers should have on their shelf, I know it has found a permanent place on mine. This book is a remarkable read so it deserves no less than 5 stars, but more if I could give them

Classic tale not to be missed

Reviewed by April Sullivan for Reader Views (11/06) "The Doctor's Daughter" is a classic tale about young English woman Rebeccah Randolph and her journey to the American frontier to be reunited with her estranged father. Donna MacQuigg gets the story rolling quickly. By the end of the first chapter, Rebeccah has arrived in America and the adventures begin. She immediately learns that New Mexico is nothing like England. This rough country is full of cowboys and Indians. The novel rapidly evolves into a love story between Rebeccah and Colonel Sayer MacLaren, a handsome American cavalry officer. Rebeccah is torn between her promise to her fiancé, who is back in England, and her attraction to this American man. The reader is drawn into her internal struggle as the book progresses into a romance. I really enjoyed the lessons that this book taught. As a young woman arriving in America for the first time from England, Rebeccah was skilled in the finer ways of social graces and a life of luxury, but she had no practical skills. By the end of the book she is riding a horse, fishing, shooting a gun, cooking, and making her own decisions. These are skills she never would have learned in a pampered lifestyle back in England, and ultimately they make her a stronger, more independent person. Rebeccah also learns how to follow her heart. She is so consumed by the proper way of doing things that she feels she must break off her engagement in person with her fiancé in England before professing her love to Sayer. Up until the last heart-wrenching and hilarious moment at the train station, she holds her ground. I look forward to seeking out more books by this author. Her fresh writing is a joy to read. Donna MacQuigg's fast-paced witty writing style kept me entranced through the entire book and I finished wanting more. She brings the characters to life and gives them each a distinct personality. Her knowledge of the terrain and lifestyle of the American West is notable. I recommend "The Doctor's Daughter" to anyone who wants to curl up with a good romance/western book. Be prepared to be swept off your feet along with Rebeccah by the captivating young soldier.

entertaining western romance

In 1880 England following the funeral of her daughter, Duchess Katherine Strong informs her obstinate granddaughter Rebeccah Randolph that her mom made one last request before dying. She wanted her two offspring to travel to the New Mexico territory to meet with their father, who deserted them sixteen years ago. Rebeccah's sister Lydia left six months ago to honor her mom's wishes, but she is to leave tomorrow; if she fails to go to America she will be left penniless. Meanwhile in the New Mexico Territory, veteran Indian fighter Colonel Sayer MacLaren moves his squad into Fort Marcy to quell renegade attacks. He meets the siblings and is attracted to Rebeccah. Her meeting with her father goes reasonably okay until he assigns her to teach the children of Rancho de Gutierrez. As Sayer keeps visiting her and her true love in England fails to reply to her letters, she falls in real love with the Colonel, who begins to believe the Indian raids are not being performed by Indians. Returning to nineteenth century New Mexico (though a generation later, see THE PRICE OF PRIDE), Donna MacQuigg provides a delightfully entertaining western romance. The lead duet is a terrific pairing as the career soldier and the English lady fall in love although neither initially believes the other is right for them. The colonel's investigation into the attacks is a cleverly designed subplot that augments the prime romantic story line. Sub-genre fans will enjoy this fine historical with its strong blending of romance with a "whodunit". Harriet Klausner
