The strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, known among us as The Doctor and the Monster, by Robert Louis Stevenson, is one of the most perfect and probably the most famous mystery novels in English-language literature of the 18th and 19th centuries, including works by Horace Walpole, Mary Shelley, Jane Austen, Oscar Wilde, Bram Stoker, Nathaniel Hawthorne, to name just a few. Stevenson could also be part of another, less numerous, but no less famous group, formed by Edgar Allan Poe, Sigmund Freud, Friedrich Nietzsche and, later, by Georg Groddeck, authors who not only caused important transformations in the literature of their time but also in the of thinking about the new century that was born. It is to this second group, already on the way to the 20th century, that The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde could be approached more properly.
