The Disease Called Despair tells the story of Afure, a child spirit who wanders through the cycle of life and death. Born into an average family in Urhobo land - they live in a one-room apartment, haunted by rats in the walls and frights above the ceiling. The family is always crippled by debt and any time they do have any money it is quickly frittered away. They have no real friends - their neighbors are hostile and unwelcoming. Meanwhile, all around the forest is being cut, taking them further away from the gods they hold so dear.
