The Discovery: A Change of the Heart

Nineteen year old David Johnston knew what he was going to do with his life after he graduated from the University of Wyoming. Living on a farm in Star Valley, Wyoming was not what he wanted to do, or where he wanted to stay for the rest of his life. David's father strongly urged him to go on a mission, but with every nag, his resistance to serve a mission grew stronger. He had grown up active in the LDS faith, but had never had the desire to gain his own testimony. This lack of desire extended to his disinterest in his own heritage and family history. After returning home from his first year at the university, he was inventorying the contents of his great grandmother's attic and found journals belonging to his great grandfather. Reading the journals sparked a strong desire in him that he had never had before, that of knowing more about his ancestors. Yet, it was another set of journals that he found in the attic that set him on a quest that would change his life forever. These journals were of his a great grandfather's friend and told of gold that was hidden in the high planes of the Wind River Mountains and directions of how to find it. From following the clues to find the gold, David realizes that his true wealth is not the gold, but what is deep in the heart of family and testimony. This story also delves into the life of the man who wrote the journals. It tells of him finding the Gospel of Jesus Christ, but has many struggles with following the path he truly believes all while being pulled into the evils of the world. This book is both faith building and entertaining, and is a good mixture of fact and fiction. It is laced with surprising twists and turns that keep the reader wanting more. The inspiration for the novel comes from a real Wach family mystery. William's grandfather Wach graduated from college in Salt Lake City, Utah. The mystery begins when Fred Wach disappears from Salt Lake City after he graduates in 1921, and then he returns home in 1928. When he returns, he is flush with cash and drives a new Cadillac. He marries and builds his bride a home without needing a mortgage. He also builds a doctors office and a drug store for his father in Murray, Utah. He also works for Kennecott Copper in Salt Lake City and then comfortably retires in 1960. Throughout his life, family would often question Fred about where he had been for those 7 years and where the money came from, but he never revealed the source. Thus, came the idea for "Wyoming Gold", which is a purely fictional answer as to where the money may have came from. About the Author"The Discovery" is W. M. Wach's first LDS mystery novel. William grew up in Wyoming close to the Wind River Mountains where the majority of this novel takes place. He now lives in Pingree, Idaho with his wife and 2 daughters. He also has three grown children, their spouses and five grand children.
