Trigger Warnings are appropriate

Hmm, Christian Science Fiction. Thought it'd be something I'd like to read. When it mentioned TRIGGER WARNINGS, it lost me. Deleted off of all of my devices.

Entertaining PLUS...

I've got to say that "The Discipling of Mytra" by Rich Coffeen is one of the most entertaining novels I've read in recent years. The story is a great one with very believable characters and so many surprises in the plot line that I was never bored! Rich is obviously a deep thinker, but he is also a great story teller. That's a pretty good combination for any author. I teach college level physics and as a "sci-fi" story this one was rich in its technological imaginings. Nothing was too far fetched and many of the ideas presented were straight out of current technology with reasonable extensions into new ideas and applications. The author has certainly studied math and science in his past and uses that knowledge well to develop his characters, and his story. But the real treat here is the philosophical/theological questions that crop up organically as the story develops. It's a great book for starting discussions or just for personal musings about what you believe, and why. Everything from human sexuality and the desire to dominate; to political philosphy and the role of faith; to the question of war and pacifism; to the utility of deceiving your enemy and the danger of self deception; to the concepts of personal liberty and social accountability, can be found within its pages. This book has it all. I highly recommend it.

Stretch your mind

Read this book if you enjoy science fiction or Christian fiction (where they actually talk about their walk with Christ). Read this book if you enjoy philosophy or a novel where character development is central to the story. Read this book if you enjoy watching characters who are real, ones who struggle with their own failings and mistakes and have to work at life. Most of all, read this book if you like having your mind stretched. Definitely do not read this if you require your reading material to be absolutely politically correct, to be predictable in it's outcome or to contain mainly one-dimensional characters; you won't find any of that here.

Interesting and Engaging!

This book was both interesting and engaging! I found the arguments and ideas presented to be both convicting and confirming. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a book that will challenge them. The story moves along at a good pace (often involving me not being able to put the book down!) and the characters and ideas are well developed. I can see this book being a revolutionary book in both the church and culture at large. I think that many people will find this book to their liking. I would advise however that the reader needs to be willing to engage with the book, as there are many concepts and logical arguments that need to be followed. Also, some of the material is for a more mature audience as Coffeen does not shy away from the true realities of life. Please read this book and tell your friends about it! You will be glad that you did!

The perfect book club novel.

The perfect book club novel. This is a unique novel, the first novel that I've actually highlighted. I'm not big on sci-fi novels, but do enjoy sci-fi movies, and I loved this book. The plot changes constantly as new events develop keeping me glued to this book. I could not put this book down. (I'm actually in my second reading.) Along with a great sci-fi plot Coffeen delivers great reformed theology as characters develop. I've actually read some chapters three and four times. Opening a closed planet parallels so many cultures around the world and the challenge of different the cultures interacting. If you are looking for reading that is not fluffy and will make you think this is the novel for you. There are many challenges in sharing the Gospel that this novel covers.

Engaging and Thought-Provoking

I'm not a sci-fi nut, but I'm definitely a sci-fi fan (IOW, it's not all I read). I find the typical sci-fi book to be heavy on sci/tech (of course), heavy on some idea or agenda (although too often extremely biased and not well thought out), but light on character development. If the genre put more emphasis on the latter, I might well be a sci-fi nut. In my opinion, good sci-fi blends these three ingredients into a cohesive, engaging, and thought-provoking story. This book does that very well and that's why it gets a 5 star rating from me. The author does a good job on the sci/tech side. Many sci-fi purists consider it a sin to have faster-than-light travel in a novel, so they may find the "pivot drive" rather offensive. I find it cool. There are several other technologies I hadn't come across before or were at least a new spin on an oldie but goodie. I found the artificial intelligence / cyborg content to be especially fascinating. The idea/agenda in this book is truly unique. No, really. Most sci-fi books I read cast religious characters (if they have them) as either insane zealots, the bad guy, or simply some minor background presence. Religious themes are usually avoided, canned, or used as some kind of rant against organized religion. I've never, ever read a sci-fi book that allows for the fact that Christianity might survive into the future and that people will seek to fulfill the Great Commission among the stars. Most importantly, this concept is played out practically and logically in the book. Non-christians may not like this concept but should be open-minded enough to recognize the uniqueness of the idea and to give it a shot. If believing and/or agreeing with everything in a sci-fi novel was a prerequisite to reading one, I doubt many of us would be fans at all. This is not the typical drivel that fills the pages of a lot of religious fiction. This book made me think, question, research, self-evaluate, etc and I can't remember the last time a sci-fi novel made me do that. Finally, there is A LOT of character development in this book. As stated previously, the is usually the weak spot for sci-fi. Here though, the characters are interesting and not at all simply side acts to the technology/idea that the story is really about. The three main characters are well-crafted and you get to know them quite well. This does a lot to raise the engagement level. Check it out.
