Our decision to follow Jesus and become His disciple can be just as costly as it was for His original 12. But the benefits are "out of this world" and they continue to cumulate in this life and through eternity. Jesus still trains His disciples by demonstrating how to live, followed by our practice of what we learn. But our understanding of His earthly demonstration is mainly through reading His word and prayer. The proof of the pudding still comes as we put our training into practice. This practice includes both becoming more like Christ (discipleship) and becoming a disciple-maker. Such successive training of faithful people down through the ages is what Jesus has depended on to continue to populate heaven with faithful disciples.
