While Australia and the western powers turned a blind eye, Indonesia, having bloodily invaded the former Portuguese territory in 1975, continued its often brutal rule. By 1996, Timorese resistance was still strong and unbeaten. The end game started, as Soeharto's iron rule deteriorated, and Indonesia's grip slowly weakened. As it did, atrocities and violence escalated. The author was assigned by the Australian Government to work in East Timor in 1996, and whilst there, to 'let them know' what was happening. The diaries he kept provide a chilling insight into a bloody period of Indonesian aggression, Timorese resistance and then indifference of western Governments culminating in an overhwleming vote for independence and Indonesia's withdrawal from East Timor in August 1999.The author found it difficult to serve three masters. He sympathized with the Timorese, and ended up being castigated, thrown out of his position and out of the country. This is his record of that time.
