In a novelization of the LucasArts CD-ROM computer game, a space shuttle is dispatched to prevent an asteroid from striking the earth, only to be pulled away to a distant and dangerous planet, with little hope of return.
Really good. 5 stars. #sciencefiction #bingedbook Beginning of the story reminded me of (movie) Armageddon (1998), with a huge twist. #thedig #alandeanfoster
Probably the 3rd or 4th best book I have read to date.

While this is one of the best SF books I have ever read, I am somewhat new to the SF world. It seems original, and I could not put it down in most parts. It ends kind of abruptly...but it is very good altogether. Is about an asteroid that comes to earth that ends up not being an asteriod. Very SFish with aliens and ancient cultures and such.
An excellent book

When I got this book I really didn't know what to expect. Sure it was writen by ADF by it could be a let down right? Wrong! The story revolves around an Earth saving space mission which goes wrong. The "unlucky" astronauts are ship wrecked on a planet far away from home. They battle group dynamics, alien equipment, alien creatures and others to find their way home. This book is highly imaginative, well written and smooth. I found the book to be compelling and deeply engrossing. If you want a book that whips you along the star lines at the speed of light and doesn't let you go.. Get this book!!!
The Dig is a fresh alternative to other sci-fi books

The Dig is a great book about a group of astronatuts who go into space to investigate a meteor that has wandered into the Earth's orbit. Three members of the team venture inside the object and discover that it is no meteor, it is an object used for interstellular travel. The crew eventualy finds themselves stranded on an alien planet with no idea how to get home. The book revolves around the crew solving puzzles that will give them more information on how to get home. The Dig was a great book full of action and plot twists to keep everything fresh and new. I highly reccomend it to all readers.

A first contact book with a puzzle woven into the story line
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 29 years ago
When I first started the book I thought the story line was a of juvenile theme, but after about 30 pages you soon find out that there is an underlying mystery that is the basis of the book. The story is an adaption of a PC adventure game that Lucas arts of Star Wars fame produced, and it wonderfully gives the best of both worlds, the discriptive imagery of Alan Dean Foster and the cunning puzzle of the game. The story is a first contact book that revolves around the adventures of the three main charecters, Boston Low, a NASA astronaut, Dr. Ludger Brink, a scientist, and Maggie Robbins, a reporter. Thier adventures exploring an alien planet are the premise of the novel. The book is a good story that holds the reader and leaves you wanting to play the game to see if you are as good as the charecters
