All the qualities of a good folktale

Barnabas Beane is a miser so rotten he'd rather melt money than give it away. A beggar he's turned away says 'the devil take you,' and the next day mysterious footprints convince Barnabas the devil has come to look for him. He asks a friend who runs an orphanage what to do, and gradually he learns to share his wealth and himself and learns where happiness really comes from- and the long tailed mouse who has been leaving footprints runs away because all the people visiting Barnabus frighten him.
