I had an idea of what this book was about before ordering it, but had no idea how applicable and relevant the story would be thirty three years after the book was written. This is the first Christian testimonial I've read to date (and I've read a few) where the author gets candidly honest about the process that led him away from Christ after being a Christian. It is evident that from his testimony, he was a "real" Christian in the beginning -- so the well-worn argument that he was "never truly Saved to begin with or he couldn't have landed in Satanism willingly and knowingly" is false with regard to Hershel Smith. Christians shy away from the truly difficult questions, and have a tendancy to want to ignore, deny, theologize, and just plain justify sin. Hershel Smith demonstrates in many ways just how very wrong this type of a position is, and how in forsaking such a position, people are not only called to accept Jesus Christ's atoning death, but to place themselves on the Cross with Him on a daily basis. When people don't, witness iniquity run rampant, and the suffering illustrated in Hershel's story. And that -- is putting it mildly. This is a gripping, and inspiring story. It is an apt illustration of just how much evil contends for our souls and our very lives each and every day. Why some seem to have it easier than others, I'll never know. But I do know, that if you are a Christian whose life has been touched by the grip of the Satanic, reading this book will give you hope and open your eyes to what is authentic in this life.
