The Detectives: I Will Always Have Your Back

On September 22, 2015, Shaw stood before a funeral congregation to eulogize his deceased police partner, the man he plotted to murder just two weeks before. Shaw a seventy-six-year-old man who served in law-enforcement for fifty-two-years is now, a shadow of the Marine hardened man young man who entered law-enforcement on September 1, 1961, and who partnered with Dick Lundgren in 1966. Together this thirty-year partnership resulted in the investigation and arrest of many criminals. This partnership brought two men as close as or closer than brothers. All cases contained herein are true and accurate and nothing has been added for dramatic emphasis. Some names have been changed to protect the innocent. This narrative is not intended to give the impression that all of our successes were ours alone or that all of our endeavors were successful. The cases mentioned in this narrative, are a few of the successes we enjoyed but not solely resulting from our efforts alone. Success in the police profession is always the result of a team effort, supportive supervisors and officer working on the periphery. I am confident that every police department has officers that can identify with the nature of a true partnership, similar to what Richard and I experienced -- knowing that no matter what, you will protect each other to your death. I hope one thing becomes clear after reading my story. Police only provide a perception of safety to the public. You see a squad drive down your street, and this presents an assumption that the neighborhood is secure. This is really a false perception. Rarely are police on the scene as a crime is being committed. Police response is almost always after the criminal has acted. My advice, based on experiences throughout a fifty two year police career, is be prepared to protect yourself, family and property for a minimum of at least thirty minutes. Police are not always able to provide the rapid response that you expect. By the time your call is answered by a 911 operator and a car is assigned the call, the criminal will more than likely have committed his crime. You will see in the cases you are about to read, that a police presence, moments before, would not have been of significance to the victims. Remember, Police can only do so much.
