Christopher Peterson, a historian at Brown University stumbles upon information that culminates in the discovery of the tomb of Christ while doing research in the Sinai. The body is exhumed and transported to the Vatican. The pope commissions a genetic analysis of the body, which leads to the discovery of three living direct descendants of Christ: Matthew Messing, a retired, Jewish professor living in a Boston nursing home; Nasir Khatsira, a Palestinian merchant who was arrested by Israeli forces during a protest and is being held in Jerusalem; and Sister Maria Guedalia, a Guatemalan member of the Sisters of Mercy order who is summoned to the Vatican by a sympathetic Irish cardinal. A diverse array of characters clash in their efforts to protect or eliminate the descendants, and all that they may represent.
