The Cheerful Depressive: A Patient's Record is not a story written from the finish line of recovery.
YoungMae Roca writes from inside the continuing experience of living with recurrent depression-while working, raising a family, laughing, traveling, and often appearing perfectly fine from the outside.
After two psychiatric hospitalizations, she began to understand depression differently: not simply as sadness to endure, but as an illness whose patterns can be observed, treated, and managed over time.
Blending lived experience with medically reviewed information, this book explores symptoms and different presentations of depression, relapse and early warning signs, treatment and hospitalization, and ways to seek help during a crisis.
It also shares practical tools the author uses in everyday life: identifying a personal baseline, tracking changes, the ROCA Signal Code (Green - Yellow - Orange - Red), a Treatment Maintenance Plan, a Safe Circle, and a minimum-day plan for difficult periods.
This is not a story about defeating depression once and for all.
It is a record of learning to notice change earlier, ask for help sooner, and find the way back to life again.
For anyone living with depression-and for the people who love them-this book offers one patient's story, not as a template, but as an invitation to begin recognizing your own patterns.
I am not writing from a finish line. I am writing from the road.
