The king of horror's demonic symphony in ten volumes, now available in omnibus editions - each containing two titles in the spine-chilling Demonata series. Lord Loss: When Grubbs Grady first... This description may be from another edition of this product.
The Demonata series, so far, is what I imagine a middle schooler draws comics about. The threats are all huge and terrifying, but have some of the silliest solutions. Magic powers sort of crop up from seemingly nowhere and the characters are all over the top weirdos. Courage the Cowardly Dog meets Lemony Snicket meets Goosebumps. I think Shan does a good job at exploring the results of trauma in big ways, tho I wish that sentiment was consistent. That might be my biggest gripe with this series so far (and I hope this changes as I continue with the books): its lack of consistency- in style/voice, and in characterization. Lord Loss is a choppy read that gets really fun at about page 180 (narration style also leveled out about this time and stopped pulling me out of immersion). Demon Thief is much better in terms of consistent narration voice, but the story (while having more gross scenes, in intensity and number) isn't as exciting- which says something since most of Demon Thief was IN the demon world.
I can definitely understand why there's such a following for the Demonata series from kids and adults alike, and I would recommend this series to folks who loved cheesy Goosebumps movies and are hungry for mid 90s camp (one guy's name is Shark for Pete's sake). There is surprising gore and brutal violence that feels like it has real consequences to the characters, which is refreshing in itself. Overall, fun.
